Almunia’s Worries and the return of William Gallas

You have to feel for Manuel Almunia. First he was beaten a little too easily at the near post by David Ngog in the game against Liverpool, then he had to deal with awkward questions about his future given the fact that Arsenal have been linked with at least two top keepers as potential replacements for him.

I still think Almunia makes a great backup goalkeeper for any top four team, but after being number one for three years, I doubt it if he could handle relegation to the bench.

If we do sign a new goalkeeper, I don’t expect Almunia to stay at the club. I think he’ll be too embarrassed to sit on the bench and watch someone else take his place. I think his situation is far worse than was the case with Jens Lehmann as he has always had the jury out on him and losing his place would be an indictment on his inability to handle the pressure of being first choice at a club like Arsenal.

It’s interesting to know that Almunia has also changed his stance on the issue. A few weeks ago he claimed to be unperturbed by the fact that we had been linked to the likes of Schwarzer, Given & Lloris. Now he claims to have concentration issues arising from the constant speculation. I guess this is why Wenger has been very coy in speaking about the issue as such uncertainty is more distracting for goalkeepers than for other outfield players.

Last night the rumour mill was filled with speculation that Mark Schwarzer is due at Arsenal this Thursday for his medical. Let me point out that this is all unconfirmed information coming from third parties and not directly from the club.

However, the general consensus is that we need to make at least two new signings; A goalkeeper and a defender. At the end of last season I speculated that excluding Chamakh which was a given at that point, we would be lucky to sign more than two players. That in itself was predicated on the fact that I expected Sol Campbell to stay and did not anticipate that Eduardo would leave.

Defensively we are unbelievably short in numbers. YoungGunsBlog tweeted on Sunday that Arsenal must be the only top club to have double the amount of fit goalkeepers than fit centre backs. At first glance its an appalling situation for a club that seeks to challenge for the Premier League title. However when you take into consideration the extreme difficulties the club has faced in signing players this summer you have to wonder if we could have done more to keep key players who left for non sporting reasons.

When I say this I’m really thinking about the curious case of William Gallas. Yes, he had his psycho issues but we did lose a precious defensive asset when he decided not to renew his contract. Sol Campbell was only ever going to be a backup player so his departure made plain sense but I am left to wonder if we could have given Gallas more assurances about his future.

His injury problems were well documented over the last few years and I won’t be surprised if he considered the fact that this could limit his appearances over the next year and scupper his chances of a new deal.

I look at the likes of Neville, Giggs and Scholes at Man Utd and I wonder. They’ve been on one year deals for ages. I have no doubt that Gallas would have been able to get another extension at the end of the season as long as he was able to keep form and maintain his performances at the highest level required.

I wonder if I should be saying this but bar a pay rise I’m sure a clause of some sort could have been inserted into his contract to trigger a renewal after certain milestones were met. Still it was always clear that the club were never going to renege on their one-year deal policy for over 30s in his case.

To the best of my knowledge, Gallas is still without at the moment seemingly hitting brick walls in his bid to find a new club. I have no doubt about his quality and and ponder whether it is too late to have a rethink on both sides of the table. It’s already been done this season at Liverpool and given our peculiar situation it would be almost immoral if the window closed with Gallas unemployed and Arsenal without a new defender.

Arsenal’s Three Young Lions plus Three Old Goalies

Today I decided to tweet my thoughts before publishing them on the web. Looks like it turned out just right. Beginers luck? I’ll see how that goes tomorrow.

I thought Walcott had a decent half against Hungary last night; heck he was the outstanding player of the half. I don’t think he put a foot wrong. He was patient yet hungry, read the game well and provided decent delivery to the forward line. I also noticed that he drifted a lot to the left – tactical instructions I believe.

It was refreshing to see Walcott come off at half time with his reputation further enhanced by a quality performance in an England shirt. Maybe if Adam Johnson had put away the early chance created by Walcott, he could have already have been credited with an assis t by half-time.

The introduction of Kieran Gibbs at halftime nearly brought tears to my eyes. I flashed back to the Champions’ League game against United and his injury against Dynamo Kiev. He truly has come a long way.

On show last night were 3 products of the Arsenal Academy; A.Cole, Gibbs, & Wilshere. With the likes of the newly promoted youngsters Lansbury, JET, Eastmond & Frimpong waiting in the wings. The days of England having only one Arsenal player (Walcott) in the national team might just be over!

With the win almost in the bag Jack Wilshere’s cameo was not unexpected. Whilst he did not perform Messi-esque wonders, he was quick to get stuck in and on the ball as soon as he came on for the fantastic Steven Gerard. Could he be a long term successor to the ageing star?

If you saw the game you would have noticed that while Gibbs was more adventurous than Clichy going forward, he was quicker in retreating back into position. With superb crossing and quick thinking, I think he will give Clichy a run for his slot this year. I figure Clichy will start the season as first choice but won’t be surprised if he is overtaken by Gibbs at the end of season.

Mirror Spy is reporting of an impending transfer merry-go-round involving goalkeepers. In short they speculate (from their ever reliable sources) that Schwarzer is indeed desperate to leave Fulham for Arsenal and that the deal will happen sooner rather than later. At that, Fulham are expected to present a bid for Brad Friedel to Villa who have lined up Manuel Almunia as a replacement. I wonder why we can’t just swap Friedel with Almunia, pay a fee and keep Fulham happy!

Wenger has said that he always does his transfer business very early (Chamakh, Koscielny) or very late (Arshavin, Gallas) I think its safe to assume that there will be no new signings in the next two weeks. Between the Official Manchester United website mysteriously appearing to have an ‘invisible profile’ on its first team squad list with the name Mesut Ozil and Fergie signing unknown strikers named Bebe, we might be in for a long August filled with more speculations.

Jack Wilshere’s Time Has Come

The big news of the morning is the fact that 18 year old Jack Wilshere looks set to recieve his first call up to the senior England squad. The in-form midfielder who started all two games at the Emirates Cup looks set to be rewarded for not only his fine pre-season form but also his steady rise to relevance in the English game. His loan stint at Bolton was highly beneficial in giving him the much needed confidence which comes by playing first team games on a more regular basis. His performances in pre-season were roundly praised by Arsene Wenger. He said;

At 18 years of age you can have patience with a player, but I believe Wilshere is stronger than last year. The few months he played at Bolton has definitely given him something. He will be used by us [next season] for sure.

Apparently, Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott are also in line for call ups to the squad. Walcott I can understand but I think Gibbs is probably in with a sneak due to the absence of an established back up to Ashley Cole as well as the woeful performance of majority of the England team at the World Cup in South Africa.

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart who is also expected to be called up is reportedly a new transfer target for Arsenal as the prospect of signing Mark Schwarzer looks ever bleaker. He was one player who was able to escape any form of criticism after the World Cup simply because he did not feature in any of England’s four games at the tournament. The 23 year old who has spoken of his concern about not being guaranteed a first team position at Manchester City due to the presence of Shay Given will be keen remain in Fabio Capello’s plans and not go the way of Ben Foster a year ago. Arsene Wenger is reportedly on the verge of making a considerable offer for the young Englishman. How that will pan out is uncertain and as usual we’ll probably have to wait till the very end of the window for anything concrete.

Today is the 2010 Members day and my only wish is for Cesc Fabregas to repay the love and trust of the Manager, Players, and Fans by declaring his unflinching commitment to the Club. That to me is the only way we can stop all these Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona stories. Anything short of that will be a disaster for the player, the club and the fans. Even if he doesn’t, I am adamant we won’t budge in our stance – even if it is just to spite Barcelona!
